The Afghanistan War serves to illustrate the complexity of modern conflict and the limitations of military power in dealing with deep-seated socio-political problems. It stands as a lesson on the risks of overextension of military commitments, the unforeseeability of long-term interventions, and the need for military strategy to be tied to realistic political, cultural, and diplomatic objectives.

Failure in Afghanistan has left more salient questions about the future of the country, the role of the U.S. in global conflict, and what that says to foreign policy in the 21st century. What the legacy of the Afghanistan war will carry with it is lessons learned painfully hard and a reminder to deeply understand the pursuit of international intervention.
