Issue Four

The Anglophone Crisis: Fractured by Language

In Cameroon, a divide over language, law and education, rooted in a colonial history that split the country between Britain and France, has grown into a violent conflict. What began in 2016 as peaceful protests by lawyers and teachers in the English-speaking Northwest and Southwest regions has left thousands dead and hundreds of thousands displaced, while the voices of those affected are rarely heard. We thank all those who have graciously contributed to the creation of this issue.

As you turn these pages, join us on a journey through Cameroon’s Anglophone regions, where history, identity and power collide, and allow these pages to fuel the fire of curiosity that lives deep within you.

Our THOUGHTS

The Anglophone Crisis in Focus

Cameroon’s decades-long collision between language, law and power has left hundreds of thousands scarred. The conflict that began with peaceful protests in 2016 has deepened into armed violence, and neither the government’s insistence on a “one and indivisible” state nor the separatists’ calls for independence has brought peace. Hundreds of thousands remain displaced, children are out of school, and censorship has kept much of the crisis out of view. The humanitarian and social costs are not something to overlook; however, the opportunity for lasting peace rooted in genuine dialogue, inclusive representation and accountability is just as important.
