Gang Rule in Haiti: The State Undone
- October 2026
In Haiti, armed gangs now control most of the capital, Port-au-Prince, and have pushed into the regions beyond it. What began as street crews once used by politicians and business elites has grown into a coalition, Viv Ansanm, that taxes residents, attacks state institutions and has displaced nearly 1.5 million people, while the voices of those living under its rule are rarely heard. We thank all those who have graciously contributed to the creation of this issue.

Our THOUGHTS
Gang Rule in Haiti in Focus
Haiti’s decades-long collision between politics, poverty and armed power has left millions scarred. The gangs’ rise to control most of the capital marks a turning point, but not the end of the story. The human cost of gang rule is not something to overlook; however, the opportunity for lasting peace rooted in security, accountable institutions and sustained support from the international community is just as important.
